A birth doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to a mother before, during, and shortly after childbirth. Unlike midwives or obstetricians, doulas do not perform medical tasks. Instead, they focus on offering guidance, comfort, and advocacy to the birthing person.

Do I Need a Birth Doula?

For me, the answer was a resounding yes. Here’s why:

1. Experienced Guidance

Doulas bring a wealth of experience with childbirth. They can provide invaluable guidance on various aspects of labor and delivery, from breathing techniques to labor positions. Their knowledge can help demystify the process, making it less daunting.

2. Emotional Support

Childbirth can be an intense and emotional experience. A doula offers unwavering emotional support, helping to keep you calm and focused. This support can be especially beneficial for single mothers by choice (SMCs) who might not have a partner to lean on during the birthing process.

3. Advocacy

Doulas act as advocates for your birth preferences. They can help ensure your wishes are respected and communicated to the medical team, allowing you to focus on the experience of giving birth rather than worrying about logistics or misunderstandings.

4. Practical Assistance

From suggesting effective labor positions to providing physical comfort measures like massage or applying counter-pressure, doulas can make the physical experience of labor more manageable.

5. Resource Before and During Birth

Especially as an SMC, having a knowledgeable and supportive person to turn to for advice and reassurance before and during birth can be incredibly helpful. A doula can be that resource, offering a sounding board for your concerns and questions.

A birth doula can be an invaluable part of your birthing team, offering expertise, emotional support, and advocacy. For single mothers by choice, having a doula can provide the additional support needed to navigate the childbirth experience with confidence and peace of mind. If you’re considering whether a doula is right for you, think about the kind of support and guidance you want during this transformative time.

Kristen’s Personal Take

For me, having a doula was an easy decision, and her presence made a significant difference in my birthing experience. My doula was a dear friend whom I have known for most of my adult life. She was a NICU mom and knew the stressors and decisions that go along with that environment.

Our set up was a little different in that she lives in a different and was scheduled for fly in for the birth, but the twins had different timing. I highly recommend Caroline at Pathfinder Birth Works! Even though she wasn’t there at 4:30am for my impromptu hospital admission, I felt prepared and empowered to talk to this on-call team of providers. She was just a phone call away and texting with my best friend who filled in for her.
