I’m pretty sure I had every pregnancy symptom imaginable—and some I didn’t even know were possible! Each symptom brought its own set of challenges, making my pregnancy journey a memorable one.

Nausea

Nausea was the first symptom to hit me, and it stayed with a vengeance. It wasn’t just the morning; it could strike any time of day. I felt constantly queasy, and it seemed like no amount of crackers or ginger tea could fully settle my stomach. It was a daily battle to find foods that wouldn’t send me running for the bathroom, and the smell of certain foods was enough to make me want to hide.

Increased Smell

Speaking of smells, my sense of smell became almost superhuman. Suddenly, I could pick up on scents from across the room. What used to be pleasant aromas, like fresh coffee or the faint smell of perfume, became overwhelming and even nauseating. Even the smallest whiff of something could send me gagging. This heightened sensitivity to smell made navigating public spaces, or even my own kitchen, a daily challenge.

Feet Swelling

Then came the swelling—my feet decided to double in size overnight. By the end of the day, they were so puffy that even my most comfortable shoes didn’t fit. I became well-acquainted with elevating my feet and wearing compression socks, all in a desperate attempt to manage the discomfort and prevent my feet from ballooning further.

Skin Tags

Skin tags were another unexpected surprise. I started noticing these small, harmless growths appearing on my neck and underarms. I had never experienced skin tags before, but pregnancy hormones seemed determined to change everything about my body. Though not painful, they were certainly an annoying addition to my growing list of symptoms.

Dry Skin

Alongside the skin tags, my skin became incredibly dry. It felt like I could never apply enough moisturizer to keep my skin from cracking. I found myself constantly slathering on lotion, trying to maintain some semblance of hydration and comfort, especially in the winter months when the dryness was at its worst.

Heartburn Turned GERD

Heartburn became a frequent visitor, but it didn’t stop there—it eventually turned into GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). It felt like a fire was constantly burning in my chest, especially after meals. I had to completely change my diet, avoiding anything that could trigger the reflux, and I slept propped up on pillows to prevent the acid from making its way up my esophagus.

Rib Pain and Numbness

As my pregnancy progressed, I experienced rib pain and numbness. It started as a dull ache and eventually became a constant discomfort, especially as my belly grew. The numbness was a strange sensation, like my ribs had fallen asleep. I learned that this was due to the expanding uterus pressing against my ribcage, causing nerve compression and irritation.

Food Aversion

Food aversion was one of the more surprising symptoms. Foods I used to love suddenly became repulsive. I couldn’t stand the sight, smell, or even thought of them. This made meal planning a bit of a nightmare since my preferences could change from day to day. It felt like my taste buds were on a rollercoaster, and I never knew what would trigger a wave of nausea next.

Navigating these symptoms was a journey in itself—one filled with a mix of challenges and unexpected turns. Each day brought something new, and while some symptoms were tougher to handle than others, they all became a part of my unique pregnancy story. Looking back, I can laugh at some of the strange symptoms and marvel at what the body goes through to bring new life into the world.
