Thankfully, after our long stint in the NICU, the twins sleep through almost anything. However, there are days when white noise helps calm them down, especially when they’re overtired or restless. White noise can mimic the sounds of the womb, providing a comforting and familiar background noise that can help babies settle down and fall asleep faster.

Many sleep experts, including those from the Huckleberry Sleep program, recommend using white noise to help put babies down for sleep. It creates a consistent, soothing sound environment that can drown out other household noises that might otherwise wake a sleeping baby. I’ve seen this recommendation work wonders for many friends who have babies around the same age as mine. They swear by their white noise machines and have had tons of success using this approach to establish good sleep habits.

That said, instead of buying a dedicated white noise machine, I decided to use my Amazon Echo Dot. I’ve had these devices for years around the house to show the time, play music, and turn lights on and off (my house is quirky, not smart), and they work great for white noise, too. You can easily ask Alexa to play white noise or any other calming sound, making it a versatile and handy tool.

I understand the hesitation some people have about having smart devices in the home—I don’t keep one in my office—but they’re honestly game-changers. They’re multi-purpose and last much longer than a single-use gadget, and I love that I can use them for different functions around the house.

If you’re considering a white noise machine for your little one but want to keep things simple, using an Echo Dot or another multi-functional device might be a great alternative! It can provide all the benefits of white noise without adding another gadget to your home.
