Tea has always been a comforting ritual for me. While many wake up to the smell of freshly brewed coffee, I’ve never quite been able to embrace a cup of it—despite my love for coffee ice cream. Instead, I start each morning with a warm mug of black tea, a habit passed down from my aunts, who would sip their “cuppa” with milk, sometimes four times a day.
When I became pregnant, reducing caffeine was hardly a sacrifice. Black tea, with its modest 40-70 mg of caffeine per cup, was already well below the 300 mg recommended limit. That comforting morning ritual stayed intact, even if my intake was slightly less. There’s something grounding about that first sip, the way it warms me up and mentally prepares me to take on the day—whether that’s a morning filled with twin infant energy or the challenges of corporate America.
Black tea has its perks beyond caffeine. Its antioxidants quietly work behind the scenes, helping reduce inflammation and supporting heart health. It’s just enough caffeine to sharpen my focus without the jitters—a gentle nudge into the day’s tasks.
But as the day draws to a close, my tea ritual changes. The black tea gives way to something softer. Once the babies are in bed and the house is quiet, I wind down with a steaming cup of herbal tea. Chamomile, often my go-to, offers a calming close to the day. Its floral warmth soothes me, helping to unwind my busy mind. Whether it’s chamomile or a blend of peppermint and lavender, the shift to caffeine-free options in the evening marks the transition from the day’s hustle to much-needed rest, prepping me to do it all again tomorrow.
In a world that can sometimes feel noisy and hectic, my tea moments—morning and evening—are small but meaningful anchors.
