Baby-wearing is one of those things that feels both simple and profound at the same time. It’s a way to be close to your baby, to feel their heartbeat against yours, and to know that in those moments, they feel safe and secure. But, for us, it was something we couldn’t fully experience in the beginning. The first few months were tough because each of my twins had their own oxygen tank. It made baby-wearing a challenge I wasn’t prepared for. While I saw other moms easily strapping their babies into carriers, walking around hands-free, and seeming so connected, I was juggling tubes, tanks, and tiny newborns.
As time passed and my twins moved off oxygen, the possibility of baby-wearing opened up. I started to see the beauty in those small moments of wearing one of them, even just for short stretches. At first, it was mostly out of necessity—having one baby close meant I had a free hand to tend to the other. But it quickly became more than just practicality. The physical closeness, the warmth, and the connection you feel while wearing your baby is hard to describe, but it’s palpable. It was a way for us to bond after those initial months of NICU routines, tanks, and medical equipment that had kept us apart in some ways.
When I realized I’d be wearing them more often, finding the right carrier became important. I needed something that would support them as they grew and something comfortable for me, too. I decided on the Ergobaby carrier after doing a bit of research. What stood out to me was how well it was designed to grow with a baby’s weight and development. With twins, I knew I needed something durable and versatile—something that could carry them through those different stages of growth. Even though the carrier can hold both babies, I usually just wear one at a time, and that’s okay because it gives me the flexibility to focus on one baby while still being able to get things done.
For me, baby-wearing isn’t just about convenience. Yes, it frees up my hands when I need them (and, as a mom of twins, I always seem to need them), but it’s also about creating that physical closeness in a busy day. Whether we’re walking around the house, going for a stroll outside, or just trying to make it through the witching hour, baby-wearing feels like an intentional pause. It’s a time when I can feel them settle into me, and I know they feel reassured by my presence.
There’s also something empowering about being able to wear your baby and still keep things moving. In the early days of motherhood, you feel stretched thin—physically, emotionally, and mentally. Baby-wearing gives you a way to stay connected to your child while managing the rest of the demands that never stop. It’s as much about the emotional bond as it is about the practical side of life. With my twins, I feel like I’m constantly balancing, and baby-wearing helps tip the scales in my favor just a little bit.
As my babies grow, I know baby-wearing will continue to change for us. Maybe one day, they’ll no longer want to be worn, but for now, it’s a part of our rhythm, a part of how we stay close in the chaos of life. It’s more than just a tool—it’s a way to create small moments of peace and connection, even in the busiest of days.
