In honor of NICU Awareness Month

The NICU can seem like an intimidating place, but if you’re there, it means your baby needs extra care—and you’re in exactly the right place. It’s natural to feel scared, unsure, or even overwhelmed, but remember that the NICU is designed to provide the specialized support your baby needs to thrive.

One of the hardest parts is walking out of the hospital without your baby, but allow yourself that time to heal, knowing your little one is in the best hands possible. It’s tough not knowing exactly when they’ll come home, but try to focus on the milestones, no matter how small. They’ll be different from the ones you may have imagined, but they’re still worth celebrating. When they get their first bath, when they transition from a feeding tube to a bottle, or when they move from an isolette to an open crib—these are the moments that show progress, even if they don’t come in the way you expected.

The NICU can also be a time of learning. Take advantage of the incredible knowledge and experience around you. Our charge nurse had been in the NICU for almost 30 years, and I learned so much from her. From how to care for my preemies to the importance of tracking feeds and diaper changes, I soaked in everything she taught me. I sometimes wonder how people take their babies home the next day without this crash course in newborn care!

Remember, the NICU journey is one day at a time. It can feel endless in the moment, but looking back, it goes by faster than you’d think. Lean on your support system, ask questions, and be gentle with yourself. Your baby is in the right place, and so are you.
